Whenever you watch a TV show set in\nAmerica, when a person moves into a property, there always seems to be friendly\nneighbours taking over some baking or a casserole to welcome their new\nneighbours. Over in the UK, though, we don\u2019t seem to make the effort to get to\nknow our neighbours, with many of us not even knowing their neighbour\u2019s names. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, getting to know your neighbours \u2013\nespecially when you\u2019re renting \u2013 actually has a host of advantages, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1: Borrowing That Cup of Sugar <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n While we don\u2019t tend to ask our neighbours\nfor a cup of sugar anymore, it is useful to be friendly with your neighbours in\ncase you\u2019d like to borrow anything off each other. Whether it\u2019s milk for a\nrecipe or a drill to do some DIY, just make sure to return the favour in the\nfuture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n 2: They\u2019ll Take in Deliveries <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We can\u2019t always be at home when we\u2019re\ngetting deliveries arriving at our homes, which can mean hassle as you try to\nrearrange or get to a depot to collect. Instead, by being friendly with your\nneighbours, you can ask them to take your deliveries, saving you hassle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n 3: Neighbourhood Watch <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n By taking the time to get to know your\nneighbours, you\u2019ll start to learn each other\u2019s habits and when you are or\naren\u2019t at home. So, if something unusual is happening, your neighbours can keep\nan eye on your home and you can do the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n 4: Parties Are Easier <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We\u2019ve all been there, lying awake as our\nneighbours have a party that keeps us awake, which can make us resentful.\nHowever, if you take the time to warn your neighbours that you\u2019re having a\nparty \u2013 and even invite them too! \u2013 they are far less likely to complain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n 5: Share Your Skills <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We all have something that we\u2019re good at.\nMaybe you should be on Great British Bake Off or perhaps your neighbour is\nhandy at DIY. By getting to know those who live around you, you can start to\nshare your skills. So, the next time you need help hanging a picture, you can\nknock on your neighbour\u2019s door. <\/p>\n\n\n\n You might even find that by being friendly\nwith your neighbours means you\u2019ll get to benefit from their skills. Maybe your\nneighbour grows vegetable or they love to knit, you might just find yourself\nbeing gifted with something they\u2019ve made. Even better, you can share your\nhobbies with your neighbours too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n 6: Great for Finding Babysitters and Pet Sitters <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re going away for a few days,\nwhether for work or a holiday, it can be difficult and pricey to find a pet\nsitter to look after your pets. Instead, if you\u2019re friendly with your\nneighbours, you may be able to ask them to nip in and feed your cat for you\nwhile you\u2019re away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Or, if you have young children, one\nneighbour might have a teenager looking for extra cash through babysitting. Meaning\nyou get to enjoy a date night away from the kids!<\/p>\n
